Independent by design

Counsel that answers to you, not a carrier.

The practice of Richard Otts, Risk Management Consultant — Mobile, Alabama.

Most insurance conversations begin with a product. Ours begin with your exposure — what an illness, a market downturn, or an outliving-your-savings scenario would actually cost you and the people who depend on you.

Because the practice is independent, recommendations are drawn from a comparison of national and regional providers rather than a single company's shelf. And because consultations are complimentary, the first conversation carries no cost and no obligation — only a clearer picture of your risk.

Client-sideWe represent your interests in the market, not a carrier's interests to you.

Four disciplines

What we advise on

Each engagement is scoped to the risk at hand — one line of coverage or a coordinated review of all four.

No. 01

Medicare Planning

Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement (Medigap) solve the same problem in structurally different ways, and the right answer depends on your health, your doctors, and your tolerance for out-of-pocket exposure. We map both routes side by side, in plain English, before you commit to either.

Advantage · Supplement / Medigap
No. 02

Life Insurance

Life insurance is income replacement, debt retirement, and estate liquidity — sized to the people who rely on you. We work from what your absence would cost, then compare carriers to cover that number efficiently, without over-insuring.

Protection sized to real obligations
No. 03

Health Insurance

A health plan is a contract about who pays when you're at your most vulnerable. We read the networks, deductibles, and exclusions so you understand precisely what you're buying — and what you'd owe in a bad year, not just a good one.

Networks, deductibles, true exposure
No. 04

Annuities

An annuity converts savings into income you cannot outlive — useful for some retirements, wrong for others. We treat annuities as one tool among several, recommending them only where guaranteed income genuinely strengthens your position.

Lifetime income, considered soberly

How an engagement works

Three steps. No pressure at any of them.

Step i

Conversation

A complimentary sit-down — by phone or at the office — to understand your situation, your obligations, and the risks that worry you. No paperwork, no commitment.

Step ii

Comparison

We survey plans from national and regional providers against your specific needs, then present the trade-offs plainly — including the option of doing nothing.

Step iii

Ongoing review

Coverage is revisited as your circumstances and the market change, so the protection you chose keeps fitting the life it was chosen for.

When to act

Medicare windows

  • Turning 65: your Initial Enrollment Period spans seven months — the three months before your birthday month, the month itself, and the three after.
  • October 15 – December 7: the Annual Enrollment Period, when Medicare Advantage and drug coverage can be changed for the coming year.
  • Medigap open enrollment: the six months after Part B begins, when Supplement coverage is available without medical underwriting.
